A person who was treated at the MetroWest Medical Center has had samples sent to the CDC to be tested for swine flu,
the MetroWest Daily News reports.
The patient was found to have Type A Influenza. That person, who has not been identified, was treated and released.
It is not yet known if the patient has swine flu, otherwise known as H1N1. "We are following the protocol of the CDC and continue to monitor the situation in compliance and consultation with Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health," Public Health Dir. Ethan Mascoop told the paper.
OTHER MASS. CASES:
On Thursday, it was learned a male student at
Harvard's School of Dental Medicine was put into isolation as he waits to hear if he has swine flu. He sent samples to the CDC after coming down with the flu last week. Massachusetts and Boston health officials are now calling it a "probable" case of H1N1.
WBZ has learned there are at least two "probable" cases of swine flu at Amherst College. School officials say that number could be has high as six. Two students have tested positive for Type A Influenza at the college, and four other students have flu-like symptoms. Test results are pending.
There are
two confirmed cases of swine flu in Lowell and two
"probable cases" in Brockton. A Coast Guard member is also being tested for the virus.
Since two boys in Lowell became infected with the virus after returning from a trip to Mexico, no other residents have fallen ill. Health officials say those cases appear to be isolated.
Boston Mayor Tom Menino is urging people to stay calm, but to take the warning seriously. Leaflets will be handed out in city neighborhoods and a hotline has been set up from anyone feeling flu-like symptoms: 617.635.4500.
