Tall Ships Back In Boston

Webcam: Boston Harbor From Top of Seaport Hotel

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The first two of 45 vessels scheduled to visit Boston for a five-day Tall Ships event have arrived.

The Libertad, a 356-foot ship from Argentina, and the 270-foot Mircea from Romania docked Tuesday morning.

The largest ship in the fleet, the 376-foot Kruzenshtern of Russia, was also scheduled to arrive Tuesday.

If you catch it at just the right time, you might be able to see the ships docking from our webcam atop the Seaport Hotel.

The 45 ships, participating in the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge, come from 17 different countries and will leave for Halifax, Nova Scotia, after their time in Boston.

This year, 12 of the ships will be open to the public for tours Thursday through Sunday.

Ships will be docked in several places:

  • the Charlestown Navy Yard
  • the Seaport and World Trade Center
  • the Moakley Court House
  • the Boston Harbor Shipyard and Marina
  • Rowes Wharf
  • Battery Wharf

Mayor Tom Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick reached a deal with Sail Boston, the event sponsors, to pay for security costs and there have been some changes.

There will be no parade of sails and no fireworks display like in previous tall ships events.

There are about a dozen agencies working to secure the Sail Boston event, but the Coast Guard is the lead agency.
