Tall Ships Continue To Pour Into Boston

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The Tall Ships are sailing in for Sail Boston 2009, and WBZ was on board a boat Wednesday as it greeted the Blue Nose II from Nova Scotia and the U.S. Coast Guard training vessel from New London, Connecticut.

The Picton Castle came in under sail Wednesday afternoon and joined other ships at the Seaport World Trade Center.

The public will be invited to board and tour at least 12 of the ships.

"People can absolutely get on board. Almost all 45 ships have arrived," said Sheila Green of Sail Boston 2009.

WBZ's Dawn Hasbrouck boarded the "Libertad," a 300-plus crew member ship from Argentina that was the first to arrive.

The ship is 57 years old, has two kitchens and 4 levels. The crew members sleep in three-tiered bunk beds and take showers in shifts.

The crew is dressing the ship in flags and lights and is getting ready to welcome Boston on board.

"Everyone is welcome on board and we'll show the ship to them and answer every question we can," said Commanding Officer Horacio Nadale.

Sail Boston 2009 officially kicks off with public tours Thursday July 9th at 5 p.m.

The first two of 45 vessels scheduled to visit Boston for a five-day Tall Ships event have arrived.

The Libertad, a 356-foot ship from Argentina, and the 270-foot Mircea from Romania docked Tuesday morning.

The largest ship in the fleet, the 376-foot Kruzenshtern of Russia, was also scheduled to arrive Tuesday.

If you catch it at just the right time, you might be able to see the ships docking from our webcam atop the Seaport Hotel.

The 45 ships, participating in the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge, come from 17 different countries and will leave for Halifax, Nova Scotia, after their time in Boston.

This year, 12 of the ships will be open to the public for tours Thursday through Sunday.
