Tall ships attracted sizeable crowds on the first day of public viewing during their 2009 visit to Boston.
Lines to board them appeared long but manageable. The long-awaited sun was in the rigging as Mark Badeau of Andover took his sons Karl and Nikolas aboard the Coast Guard Barque Eagle after being cooped up in their house by relentless rainy weather.
"It's way overdue," he said.
Gerry Lipsett of Cohasset might agree. Cadets gave him a new hat after showing him around the Coast Guard training ship on which he served in 1953 and on which Lynn Foerster of Toronto found a photographer's paradise. It was her first time aboard a tall ship. She said the size of it impressed her most.
"And it's a wonderful city to show the crew and cadets. They say going to sea always comes with sea stories; well it's the ports of call that bring just as many nice stories," said Capt. Eric Jones, commanding officer of Eagle.
The Kruzenshtern brings some of those stories. The Russian tall ship led the parade of sail into New York Harbor for the U.S. bicentennial birthday in 1976. It was built in 1926 in Germany then given to the U.S.S.R. in 1946 as a war reparation. She has starred in German and Russian films and is one of dozen stars with rigging open to the public through the weekend.
