Tanker Oil Spill Prompts Power Outage In Harwich
Some 3,500 Gallons Of Oil Spill During Tanker Truck Collision
HARWICH (WBZ) ―
A tanker truck rolled over onto a pickup truck and leaked about 3,500 gallons of fuel oil all over a roadway in Harwich Wednesday afternoon, forcing NStar to shut off power to 1,000 customers.
It's unknown how the crash happened but the tanker was completely tipped on its side at an intersection on Great Western Road and Lothrop Avenue. The spill shut down the roadway at Main Street, which state police said is a major east/west roadway through town.
Troopers said the roadway was expected to be reopened sometime Thursday.
The drivers of both vehicles survived the wreck and their injuries are said to not be serious. The driver of the pickup truck was stuck inside the vehicle for about 20 minutes before he was extricated and taken to an area hospital.
NStar shut down power to about 1,000 customers in the area Wednesday night as crews worked to get the truck upright as a precaution. Power was expected to be restored shortly.
Officials said 3,500 gallons of oil leaked out of the truck.
The roadway was completely blocked off because of the spill. Crews were working to clean up the mess and get the tanker removed. Crews were able to absorb about 2,000 gallons of oil using sand. However, about 1,000 gallons may have spilled into a nearby marsh area. Officials were trying to determine how much actually seeped into the ground.
They said they believed they contained the oil to the road as front end loaders heaped sand on the area to keep the oil from traveling too far.
Hazardous materials crews were on scene monitoring the situation Wednesday night.
