2 Boys Admit Setting Taunton Warehouse Fire
TAUNTON, Mass. (WBZ) ―
Two boys have admitted to being responsible for a four-alarm fire that gutted a former factory building in Taunton last week.
The owners suspected arson in the fire that broke out late in the afternoon on March 24., in the 50-year-old building on William Hooke Lane, off Arlington Street.
Police said two boys were interviewed and have confessed to starting the fire with cigarettes lighters and spray cans.
Police said the boys went into the building "while on an adventure" and found cans with starting fluid. They then made torches using the cigarette lighters and spray bottles. The boys told police they accidentally caught a wooden crate on fire, which became out of their control and they fled.
Both boys will be summoned to court on charges of trespass and burning a building.
The building was used by Stone Station Allied Co. of Oklahoma to store stone supplies.
At the height of the blaze, thick clouds of smoke billowed into the sky and could be seen for miles. Nearby residents feared the flames would spread, but firefighters were able to contain them.
No injuries were reported, officials said.
Stone Station Allied was in the process of moving the building's inventory to company headquarters in Oklahoma.
