Local stores are hoping to cash in on the millions of dollars people will be spending on those economic stimulus checks over the next few months.
Some are even offering to add to the amount if you spend the money in their stores.
Sears and
Kmart will add a 10 percent bonus.
Home Depot is showing customers how to use their checks to cut household costs for years to come. The store is promoting items to make homes more efficient and environmentally friendly. "That way the short term stimulus will actually save you money in the long run, save money on a year-to-year basis, up to 30 percent in some cases," said Rob Tefft of the Home Depot in Danvers.
The president of the Massachusetts Retailers Association, Jon Hurst, says it's all an attempt to boost lackluster sales. "You're going to see a lot of promotion... It's been tough in the retailing industry, particularly starting late last year. It's an aftermath of what we've seen in housing and rising energy prices."
Home Depot in particular has felt the effects of the housing market slump.
The checks are part of a $68 billion plan Congress passed to jumpstart the economy. The plan allows individuals to get as much as $600.00, and families up to $1200.00. Direct deposits began Monday, with checks going out through mid-summer. "This type of thing really builds momentum," said Hurst. "It's very much like the holiday season. You get people back into the process of shopping."
