Lawrence School Employee Resigns In Midst Of Probe
LAWRENCE (AP) ―
A special assistant to the superintendent of Lawrence schools has resigned amid a probe that he used school computers to run background checks on local politicians, celebrities, pro athletes and others.
Mark Rivera sent a letter of resignation to Superintendent Wilfredo Laboy on Monday.
The 32-year-old Rivera was paid $66,000 annually as a special assistant to Laboy.
Laboy tells theĀ
Eagle-Tribune he's glad to put the episode behind him and Rivera is "remorseful."
Police say Rivera conducted about 400 checks on various people, including police Chief John Romero, Mayor Michael Sullivan, and every mayoral candidate. He also did checks on major league players David Ortiz and Johnny Damon, as well as actors Michael Chiklis and Hugh Laurie.
