Reporter Notebook: Staking Out Duke Med Center
DURHAM, N.C (WBZ) ―
Hello from Duke Medical Center. We are actually inside the ER now - unfortunately my terrific photographer Nate is waiting for an X-ray on his arm because he fell down the stairs from the satellite truck around 4:30 today. He was in a lot of pain and we are hoping it's not broken. The other crews were joking with him that this is not a good way to get inside and see Ted!!
The big news today came around 11:30 this morning - that Senator Kennedy was up and walking around. Earlier we'd been told by the Senator's staff that there would not be any news coming out today - but apparently they changed their minds and shared this positive update.
None of the doctors frpm Duke are allowed to talk to the press, and we are kept away from some of the doors where we might see family members arriving, so today we went South to Chapel Hill and interviewed Dr. Victor Perry, a neurosurgeon from UNC's School of Medicine.
He told us it's a great sign to hear the Senator is walking around, that it's important for him to build up strength for chemo and radiation. I was most surprised when he told us that brain surgeries are not extremely painful procedures because the brain doesnt have fibers that sense pain.
Amazing.
We're waiting here for more word on his condition now - to see whether he will make a public exit (like in Boston), although I am told they're not planning one. The scene outside the hospital has quieted down a little - many national crews have moved onto the Obama Hillary big news of Obama securing the delegates - but there are still a lot of local crews around.
P.S...Good news. Nate's arm is not broken. He has a deep bruise and doctors say he is lucky it wasn't even an inch further back or it could have been more serious.
