Teen Hit, Killed By Commuter Train In Belmont

BELMONT (WBZ) ― A Belmont High School student was hit and killed by a commuter train in Belmont Thursday afternoon.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the 17-year-old girl was hit by a Fitchburg commuter rail train heading inbound toward Belmont Station just before 1 p.m.

The tracks run behind the school and officials tell WBZ students often use the tracks as a pass through when leaving school. "We have a number of times advised students not to use the tracks as a cut though. Unfortunately some people do," said Belmont Police Chief Richard McLaughlin.

A message can be found on the school Web site warning students not to trespass on the tracks.

The unidentified student had left school early when she was hit. Although it is unclear why, school officials said seniors who have a pass are able to leave school when they are finished with classes.
