Mass. Expanding Summer Jobs Program To 10,000
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Massachusetts aims to nearly triple the number of summer jobs available for teens through the state's summer jobs program - to 10,000 with the help of federal stimulus money.
Gov. Deval Patrick announced Friday that he plans to combine workforce development and public safety funds from the stimulus package with money from the state's summer jobs program, totaling $30 million over the next two years.
The state's summer work program for young people, called YouthWorks, places young people in jobs that include administrative, camp counselors, landscaping and maintenance.
In 2008, 3,800 young people found summer employment through YouthWorks.

Patrick says 10,000 jobs for residents aged 14 to 24 will be created in 60 communities across the state over the next two years.
State officials say summer jobs help keep teens out of harm's way.
Teens and young adults can find out if they are eligible for a summer job through YouthWorks by calling the Governor's YouthWorks Hotline 1.866.968.8461.
Young people in Boston can also apply to
Boston's Summer Youth Zone on their web site or call 617-635-HOPE.
