2 Mass. High Schools In Nation's Top 50

Two Massachusetts high schools have been ranked among the top 50 in the country, by Newsweek magazine. MATCH Charter Public High School in Boston is ranked 25th on the Newsweek list. Sturgis Charter Public High School in Hyannis follows at number 43.
MATCH Charter has about 220 students in grades 9-12, selected by random lottery from the city of Boston. In order to graduate, students must pass 2 AP exams, and two Boston University college classes.
Sturgis Charter is an independent public high school for students on the Cape. Their students are also selected by lottery. Sturgis offers something called the International Baccalaureate program, an extremely rigorous curriculum in which students do college level work with college level tests.
Both are public, tuition-free charter schools funded with a combination of state and private money.
The full Newsweek magazine list of the country's best high schools contains 1,300 schools from across the nation. It includes 32 from Massachusetts. The highest ranked non-charter schools in the state were Boston Latin, at 115, and Belmont Public High School at number 156.
Newsweek calculates the list using a single metric: the proportion of students taking college-level exams, such as Advanced Placement tests. Some specialty high schools that recruit their students, rather than being open to the public, were excluded from the rankings.
Two New Hampshire schools made the top 1,300 list: Hollis/Brookline High School cracked the top 1,000 at 997 and Hopkinton High School ranked 1,111.
