Toys For Tots Forced To Trash Donations

Dangerous Lead In Toys Creates Donation Shortage

by Kate Merrill
SOUTH BOSTON (WBZ) ― Toy recalls over the last few months have created quite a problem for Toys For Tots in South Boston as they watch their donation bins get lower and lower.

Toys For Tots has a huge bin of toys and every one is desperately needed. But the pile is headed straight for the garbage because many of them are on a massive toy recall list.

It's a heartbreaking situation for the folks at Toys For Tots in Boston.

They need every toy they get so they can fill the more than 200,000 requests in Boston alone this holiday season.

But this year they are facing a new challenge.

Many toys have been recalled after lead paint and dangerous magnets were discovered.

It's hard for parents and it's becoming a nightmare for this toy charity that provides for thousands of kids.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists pages and pages of recalled toys that Toys For Tots can't give out, and the list is only for October and November.

So instead, volunteers must spend tons of time filtering through and throwing away donations.

It's leaving the bins too low and making an already tough task much harder than it has to be.
