Green Line Trolley Derails, Catches Fire

BRIGHTON (WBZ) ― The MBTA is busing passengers on a portion of the Green Line after a trolley derailed and caught fire in Brighton early Wednesday morning.

MBTA spokeswoman Lydia Rivera said about 30 passengers were on the outbound B line train when it crashed around 1:30 a.m. All were safely evacuated.

Rivera said the rear trolley on the two-car train jumped the tracks on Commonwealth Avenue near Chestnut Hill Avenue and hit a utility pole. The derailment brought down overhead power lines, causing the fire that caused significant damage to the train.

Crews removed the train eight hours later, but officials aren't sure when service would be restored on the B line, because of power issues.

Shuttle buses are being used to carry passengers between Boston College and Babcock Street.
