Merrimack is the second college in the country to put a freeze on tuition as students and family struggle in a sinking economy.

Students at Merrimack College in North Andover got the kind of news this week that is virtually unheard of on college campuses.
The school is freezing the costs of tuition, room and board.
It's a move driven by the sagging economy, and the recognition that paying college bills has grown increasingly difficult for many families.
"With studetns and families doing all they possibly can to pay for a college education, we strongly believe that Merrimack College must do its part to make an education as accessible as possible for them," said Dr. Ronald Champagne, president of Merriack College.
Champagne tells WBZ many such budget decisions would normally be made early next year, but school officials wanted students to be able to go home after the fall semester knowing college wouldn't cost them any more next year than it has this year.
Tuition, room and board at Merrimack costs about $39,500 annually. College officials say the average amount of financial aid per student is $17,500.
Merrimack is just the second college in the country to impose a freeze on next year's tuition.
