Woman Seeks Funds For Turkey's Eye Surgery

REHOBOTH (WBZ) ― A local family is hoping to help a turkey have a better life this Thanksgiving.

Lyndsey Medeiros and her husband are trying to raise money to get him cataract surgery.

The turkey, dubbed as "Jerry" has been living with them for the past week, in a barn they built for other animals they rescue. The Medeiros family adopted Jerry and his girlfriend, Penelope the turkey, from another farm and soon discovered that the 3-year-old had trouble seeing.

"You can see that the black part of his pupil is cloudy or white appearing and that is sort of a layer that they can't see through," said Medeiros, who works as a veterinary assistant.

The surgery will cost Jerry about 2600 dollars.

Medeiros put an ad on Craigslist for help and so far, has received 500 dollars in donations through her website, www.MedeirosFarmKidsatPlay.com.

"I'm not expecting to get a huge amount of money given that he's a turkey and that sorta thing," Medeiros said.

Some critics say the turkey doesn't deserve the donations and that the money should go toward helping people who need money this Thanksgiving.

Medeiros, a mother of a toddler loves animals and her husband built a barn behind their house where they house goats, quail, and turkeys.

She hopes to get Jerry in for surgery in the next couple of weeks. Soon after, he'll be able to see his girlfriend Penelope again and improve his quality of life.

"They can live out the next 10, 12 plus years here and hopefully be happy," Medeiros says.
