Job Hunt Proves To Be Challenging In Tough Economy
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
James Patterson is hoping there is new action behind President-elect Barack Obama's words.
The number he faces 240,000 jobs lost in October and he was one of them now living on his first unemployment check. "It's $200 a week," he said.
Patterson was the publisher of a South End newspaper until last month when the credit dried up and 20 people were instantly laid off.
Now Patterson keeps copies of job applications in a folder to track his progress, though after a month, there's been little.
"Have you been able to get an interview?" asked WBZ's Beth Germano.
"I haven't been able to get an interview yet," said Patterson. "I've sent resumes to 100 different places."
Patterson has prioritized his job search. First, constant networking, then he checks daily job listings on the Internet and even in the newspaper classifieds.
WBZ first caught up with Patterson on Oct. 7, when he was two days out of work and using the services of the Workplace Career Center in Boston.
Patterson said he's determined to make it.
Unemployment rose to 5.3 percent last month. Nationally, the jobless rate rose to 6.5 percent a 14-year high.
