The nation's unemployment rate hit a
14-year high Friday.
Boston-based Fidelity and the Boston Globe announced layoffs this week.
More companies are expected to follow with job cuts of their own.
So how bad is it in Massachusetts? Unemployment numbers for October won't be out for two more weeks, but last month's figures were below the national average.
The unemployment rate in Massachusetts was 5.3 percent in September, below the national average of 6.1 for the month.
On Friday, that national average jumped to 6.5 percent for October.
Compare the state's unemployment rate with the nation for 2008 What jobs are being affected? The construction, manufacturing, education, and financial sectors lost jobs in Massachusetts, according to
the latest data from the state.
So far this year, 1.2 million jobs have disappeared nationwide. Over half of the decrease occurred in the past three months alone.
Here are some of the latest numbers nationally released Friday:
- Factories cut 90,000 jobs (the most since July 2003)
- Construction companies got rid of 49,000 jobs
- Retailers cut payrolls by 38,000
- Professional and business services reduced employment by 45,000
- Financial activities cut 24,000 jobs
- Leisure and hospitality axed 16,000 positions
