Lightning Sparks Upton House Fire
UPTON (WBZ) ―
Lightning struck a home in Upton during a severe thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon, catching the house on fire.
Firefighters knocked the two-alarm fire out and officials told WBZ it was fortunate that no one was home when lightning struck.
The fire happened at 15 Ephraims Way.
"It sounded so big," said neighbor Tom Conley. "I mean I can't imagine it to anything. It was probably the loudest sound I ever heard."
"It threw pieces of brick 20 to 25 feet when it hit the roof," said Upton fire Chief Mike Bradford.
Firefighters said flames traveled across the roof of the home. Bradley said it was fortunate no one was home because the lightning traveled down the side wall to reach the ground. The strike also knocked out the home's electrical system.
