In my town, if you chose to live near a railroad crossing, you know you're going to hear some horns.
If you buy a house next to the Mass Pike or Route 128, you have to put up with a certain amount of traffic noise.
Comes with the territory, right?
Well, some Charlestown residents living next to the USS Constitution say
the cannon noise is too much for them and that it's "excessive."
The cannons go off twice a day - once at 8 a.m. and again at sunset.
Those daily salutes have been going on since 1787, although it stopped in the early 1900's until 1975.
The neighbors asked the ship's commander to silence them completely or at least make the blast softer.
Commanding Officer Timothy Cooper told the
Boston Herald says that's probably not going to work
They tried using 75-percent less gun powder to see what would happen Tuesday.
Cooper said it came out more like a "sharp crack" than a "boom" and it just didn't sound the same.
A group supporting the time-honored tradition says they will rally at the ship on Saturday at sunset.
