Christmas is coming a bit early this year for five military families in Massachusetts.
Each of them received a $1,000 gift card for the holidays as part of the "Wal-Mart Gives Back" campaign.
David Lauzon Jr. is a disabled veteran who served in Iraq. Economic times have been tough for him and his family, but thanks to Wal-Mart, Christmas can be a reality this year. "It's unbelievable that this has happened. When I retired, it was unexpected, so I wasn't completely planned for it. So money has not been all that great. And (the gift card) helps us to have a really good Christmas."
Carol Brown's husband is currently serving in Iraq and she is unemployed, so this gesture by Wal-Mart means everything. "I lost my job in August, so this is a really good experience. I can go out and get gifts for my kids, so it's really a good feeling."
Local veteran support groups, like
Operation Homefront, are also involved in the effort. "I think this is fantastic by Wal-Mart," said Bill Moore of Operation Homefront. "Wal-Mart is a great partner for Operation Homefront. They're always there -- always looking to help out the men and women fighting for our country and our freedom."
This program is not just limited to Massachusetts, about 1,500 military families in 30 different cities across country are also enjoying gift cards.
