A driver escaped serious injury when a drive shaft flew off a truck and smashed through the windshield of his Mercedes on Route 128 Monday.
David Johns, 57, of Lexington, was traveling on 128 South in Waltham near the Totten Pond Road exit when the 30-pound piece of steel came off a Maki Building Centers truck, shattered the windshield and landed in his lap.
"All I felt was just pain," he said. "It seemed like tons of glass from the windshield... and the warmth of blood just streaming down."
Johns was rushed to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He is recovering at home with scratches and cuts on his face.
The truck driver, James Gauthier, 48, of East Templeton, stopped after the accident. He said he heard a noise and pulled over.
"All of a sudden, I heard a loud bang and then two thumps. It was a mess," Gauthier said. "I didn't know what was inside, and I was scared there would have been a lot more damage."
Gauthier told WBZ's Beth Germano his truck was running fine before the accident.
But through it all, Johns is keeping his sense of humor.
"I can't win the lottery, but I can get a drive shaft in my face."
There's no word yet if any charges will be filed.
