A water main break shut down Congress Street in Boston for most of Wednesday.
The street was closed between State and North Streets. The 24-inch main broke around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night, and crews worked all day Wednesday to fix the break. Officials said they would have the road open for rush hour traffic.
"There's roadway damage here on the northbound side of Congress Street and the rear of City Hall," said Tom Bagley of the Boston Water and Sewer Department. "We will be working through the day to replace the section of pipe that broke."
The break did not cause any damage to the surrounding buildings, including City Hall. Water service in the area has not been interrupted.
It is still unclear what caused the water main to break.
