A waterspout was spotted Thursday afternoon off Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island near Prudence Island, the National Weather Service reported.
A waterspout was sited from North Kingstown over Narragansett around 4:08 p.m., the NWS said. Officials said a trained spotter saw the waterspout in the middle of the east passage of Narragansett Bay coming from James town and heading northeast.
Patrick Hay, with Smiths Detection, provided photos of the waterspout taken with a camera at the Rhode Island DEM Port Security.
A waterspout is similar to a tornado but forms over water, which can pose a danger to boaters. They occur during thunderstorms, though they are most common in tropical areas.
