EMT Who Faced Charges In Shooting Found Dead

BOSTON (WBZ) ― A Boston paramedic accused of shooting and wounding his deceased colleague's brothers, then using his emergency training to treat them, has been found dead at his home hours after posting bail.

Suffolk District Attorney spokesman Jake Wark confirmed a suicide Monday at the Boston address of 41-year-old Rhys Williams.

In a statement, Boston EMS offered prayers to Williams' family and said it was "deeply saddened by this tragedy."

Williams was found hours after he was released on $30,000 bail on charges of assault with intent to murder. He had been on administrative leave.

Police say Williams went to a Sept. 20 party in Abington after attending a benefit for his former partner, Mark Brinkman, who died in May.

Police say Williams was kicked out of the party and was outside sitting in his car when he began to argue with brothers John and Paul Brinkman.

At some point, someone shattered the windshield on Williams' new Subaru Outback. Then, the door of the car opened and police say that's when Williams pulled a gun and shot each man once.

John Brinkman, 42, of Quincy, was shot in the leg. His 36-year-old brother Paul, of Hanover, was shot point-blank in the chest.

Investigators say Williams grabbed his EMT bag and tried to help treat the men. He also allegedly called 911.

Williams had been an emergency medical technician in Boston since October 2002.
