Wellesley Rattled By Bomb Scares, Robbery

WELLESLEY (WBZ) ― Two suspicious devices were left in Wellesley Thursday afternoon, one outside a supermarket and one inside a bank. The bank device was left by a robber.

The incidents caused a frenzy of police and bomb squads along Washington Street and surrounding roads.

Police are trying to determine if the two incidents are related. The first device was left on a pay phone outside the Star Market. Police say they found the device after receiving a 911 hang-up call from the pay phone.

Moments later, a different device was left by a robber inside the Bank of America building at 342 Washington St. around 4 p.m., which is about 3/4 a mile down the road from the Star Market.

No one was injured.

Nearby buildings and several streets were blocked off as the bomb squad moved in to investigate.

Police set up a perimeter of the area that extended for several blocks down Washington Street. Traffic was diverted for hours, and people are urged to avoid the area. The roadways were eventually reopened Thursday night.

A robot was sent in to inspect the device outside the Star Market.  It shot at the device, which caused no detonation.  Police say the device is being inspected to determine if it was a hoax.

ARE INCIDENTS RELATED?

Police are trying to determine if the incident at the Star Market is related to the bank robbery.

On Monday, a device was left tied to a phone booth in Needham that referenced Needham High School. As a precaution, police said the school was evacuated.

Last Friday, a bank robber in Holbrook eluded police by calling in a bomb threat at a school accross town while he robbed the bank.

The search is on for Thursday's robber. He is shown in the surveillance images wearing an Adidas jacket and a dark ballcap and mask.

Police say he fled the bank in a car. It's unclear if he got away with any cash.

Anyone with information about the robbery or the suspicious device left at Star Market is asked to contact local authorities.
