It's a day of fresh starts and new beginnings on Center Street in West Roxbury. Boston Mayor Tom Menino went on a ribbon cutting spree on Saturday as six shops celebrated their grand openings. "There's a nucleus of strong neighborhoods here in Boston small businesses locally owned who hire local people to work in their businesses," said Menino.
Local businesses, the mayor says, that are brave enough to step up in this down economy. "I think it is going to buck the trend. You start out with small businesses and maybe it moves on up the line," said Alex Poulous, a West Roxbury resident.
The Upper Crust on Center Street will soon be opening its 14th shop. "Initial shock of the economy, you could see people stop going out as much, coming in as much, things like that. But it really hasn't affected sales. We've noticed that delivery has gone up," said Jordan Tobin of the Upper Crust Pizzeria.
Tobin said even though people are watching how they spend, he is seeing a lot of growth. "We're lucky we're in a business that has a lot of volume. We started off with five people
I think we have about 180 employees right now."
So now all these businesses need, is the support of the local community. "So if you think about it, what better way to help your neighbor's business than come down and support their entity," said Poulous.
Menino will be back in West Roxbury next month for two more ribbon cuttings making a total of eight shop openings on Center Street in just six weeks.
