Corrections Officer Found Dead After Standoff
WESTMINSTER (AP) ―
A Massachusetts correction officer accused of brandishing a handgun and making threats at a Fitchburg bar has died after exchanging gunfire with police outside his home.
A spokesman for the Worcester district attorney's office says 49-year-old Michael A. Membrino of Westminster was pronounced dead at Heywood Hospital in Gardner shortly after the Sunday night shooting.
Spokesman Don Xenos did not disclose whether Membrino, who was wearing body armor, was shot by police or shot himself. He says the shooting remains under investigation.
The Massachusetts Department of Correction says Membrino was an officer at the North Central Correctional Institution, a medium security facility in Gardner.
Witnesses told authorities that Membrino brandished a handgun while making threats at Partners Pub in Fitchburg earlier Sunday. Authorities did not divulge the nature of the threats. He was found later at home.
