Wearing a suit and a great smile, one Weymouth seventh grader was treated like a star at the Maria Weston Chapman Middle School on Wednesday.
That's because Bryan Huynh saved his family from a violent home invasion last summer. "Officers
found Bryan's mother, grandmother and aunt tied up in plastic ties and duct tape," said the officer who detailed the incident at today's ceremony. "We later learned that three men demanded money and jewelry and held the women at gunpoint threatening to shoot them if they didn't comply."
Hearing the commotion, Bryan hid in a bedroom and called 911. Police arrived quickly and captured the four men as they fled. Officer's said Bryan's quick thinking demonstrated an "unbelievable amount of bravery and courage."
So today, the Massachusetts Safety Officers League gave Bryan the annual Citizens Safety Award an honor given to just one student in the state each year. "I never knew such a small act could get me an award so big, so prestigious," he said.
But what Bryan calls a small act made a huge difference, and turned the 13-year-old into a role model. "I knew that paying attention in school would help me get far in life."
Police say Bryan didn't just help his family that day, he helped get four criminals off the streets. Weymouth police say the culprits were known by Boston's Gang Unit as well as the ATF.
