Whitey Bulger Search Hits TV In Germany

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The search for fugitive gangster James "Whitey" Bulger has reached German television.

FBI spokeswoman Gail Marcinkiewicz told WBZ agents from Boston will appear on German TV's equivalent of "America's Most Wanted" Wednesday to ask for the public's help in catching Bulger.

Marcinkiewicz said the FBI has been trying to boost Bulger's profile overseas, since a couple resembling Bulger and his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, was videotaped in Sicily last year.

Since September, when the tape was made public, Bulger has been featured in TV broadcasts in Rome, London and Madrid.

Bulger, 78, the former leader of the Winter Hill Gang, has been on the run since January 1995, when he was tipped off by FBI agent John Connolly that he was about to be indicted on racketeering charges.

Bulger, who is on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list, is also wanted for 19 murders in and around Boston during the 1970s and 1980s.

There is a $1 million reward for information leading to his arrest.

The FBI says the last confirmed Bulger sighting was in London in September 2002.
