Police have filed charges against a Wilmington Pop Warner football coach who got into a fight with the father of one of his players.
William Reynolds will appear in court next month on a charge of aggravated assault and battery.
The incident last Friday left the father, Michael VonKahle, with several injuries including a shattered eye socket and a broken nose.
Police said the dispute began after the coach ordered VonKahle's 12-year-old son to run laps because he was late for practice. VonKahle objected, saying it was his fault the boy was late.
The men took their argument to the woods away from the football field, where VonKahle allegedly made an insulting remark about the coach's weight.
It escalated into a physical confrontation, with each man accusing the other of being the aggressor.
Reynolds has been suspended by the Pop Warner league pending an investigation.
