Wind Turbine May Be Installed On City Hall's Roof

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Boston Mayor Tom Menino says he is planning to install a wind turbine on the roof of City Hall.

In addition to the small-scale turbine, Menino also plans to look at the possibility of placing large turbines at up to six Boston Public Schools.

Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools, Dr. Carol Johnson, said the proposed turbines would be an educational experience for school kids. "This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to see up close on a daily basis the power of new technology in creating a cleaner, greener environment," she said. "These turbines will serve as outdoor classrooms for our students and help prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow in the fast-growing field of renewable energy."

Menino says the proposed turbines could help create new jobs and boost the city's economy. "Renewable energy projects in Boston are good for our environment and will create good 'green collar jobs' for local residents," said Menino.

The mayor decided to install the turbine on top of City Hall after looking at wind data collected on the roof since October. According to the mayor's office, this type of installation would be the first of its kind in the country.

The city and the Boston Redevelopment Authority are also working on a proposal to create wind energy zoning codes to help encourage private turbine projects.
