The homes, erected in 1848 just as Connecticut outlawed slavery in its borders, are the last remnants of the city's once-thriving "Little Liberia" neighborhood of free black residents. Now, the tale of the two wood-frame houses and the entrepreneurial Freeman sisters who owned them is showcasing the significance of such antebellum communities — but just as preservation money for the houses is especially scarce.

Mass. State Rep. Lew Evangelidis of Holden wants to eliminate "not guilty by reason of insanity" as a verdict option in murder cases and replace it with "guilty, but insane." Murder defendants convicted under the insanity defense would have to spend at least 10 years in a secure mental health facility. That would be followed by annual reviews to determine whether they continue to pose a danger.

Mass. Commissioner Scott Soares of the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources says invasive plants pose a threat to the "native biodiversity" in the state. Officials say Oriental Bittersweet and Multiflora Rose are the two invasive species most commonly used in holiday wreaths and garlands because of their natural beauty. It is illegal to sell or import either of the plants in Massachusetts.

Mass. A prison system spokeswoman says they think it shows the violence is connected to the tendencies of the inmates themselves — not the Patrick administration's controversial decision to double-bunk inmates in some cells starting in January. That recommendation has been criticized by guards and advocates for prisoners.

Transgender Inmate Renews Electrolysis Request

A convicted killer who is seeking a taxpayer-funded sex-change operation is again asking a judge to approve electrolysis treatments. Michelle Kosilek (KOH'-sih-lech) was born as Robert. He has been living as a woman in an all-male prison in Norfolk, serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Cheryl, in 1990. Troopers say 60-year-old Timotheus Phol, of Hartland, Vt., struck a deer on Interstate 89. Both headlights on his car were destroyed, and the vehicle became disabled facing south in the northbound lanes. The FAA says Cape Air Flight 311 took off from Boston on Saturday night and was headed for Martha's Vineyard. Beijing's dictators have always dismissed human rights as an American, not a universal, concept. They claim it is an imperialist ploy to weaken their country. Obama contradicted this propaganda to Hu Jintao's face.
