Young Mass. Mom Killed In New York City

NEW YORK (WBZ) ― A young mother from Worcester County was shot and killed in New York City Sunday. Her fiancé was wounded and her baby witnessed the attack.

Chelsea Frazier, 19, of Southbridge was with her fiancé Carlos Cruz and her 14-month-old son Alijah when someone approached them in their new Toyota Camry on Barrett Avenue in the Bronx around 4 p.m.

Cruz said they were lost in the neighborhood when an armed man came up to their car and tried to rob them. There was a struggle over the gun and it went off.

Frazier, who was behind the wheel, was shot and killed. Cruz was hit in the leg. The toddler was not hurt.

Witnesses told police they saw a man in a Jeep speed away from the scene.

Frazier's grandparents say they have concerns about the story Cruz told police. "I just don't feel right about the whole thing," said Frazier's grandfather Robert Manthorne. "Something's not right."

According to Manthorne, his granddaughter and Cruz had just broken off an engagement. "I know he made a verbal threat… he was going to take the baby away from her," said Frazier's grandfather Robert Manthorne. "He was going to do what he had to do."

"You can't image," said Shirley Manthorne. "When you lose a child, part of you dies, and you can't fill that void."

Cruz' uncle, Harry Miller, says his nephew feels responsible. "He feels responsible, because he's saying he tried to pull the gun away."

Cruz was taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment. According to WCBS, Cruz later left the hospital under police escort.

Cruz recently moved to Worcester County from the Bronx. He, Frazier and Alijah lived with Franzier's grandparents in Southbridge.

There have been no arrests. Alijah is currently in New York State custody.
