The boyfriend of Julie Corey, the woman accused of kidnapping a baby removed from the body of a murdered Worcester woman, said he was certain the baby was his until police told him what had happened.
"Either she's a really good actor or I'm as stupid as you can be," says Alex Dion, who goes on to explain Corey had miscarried their baby last September.
He said the couple broke-up in October after living in the same Southgate Street apartment house where Darlene Haynes lived and where her body was found; then in April, Corey told him she was pregnant by him again.
"She looked like she was pregnant. She had a belly. She showed symptoms. She acted like she had cravings," and he says he felt kicking. "What I thought was kicking, what seemed like kicking to me."
Then, the day after Haynes, 8 months pregnant, was last seen alive, with Julie Corey, Dion says Corey called and told him she'd had their baby three hours after having labor pains. Darelne Haynes's body was found several days later, wrapped in a blanket in her bedroom closet, her baby cut from her womb. Police now say they're confident, based on their investigation, the baby with Julie Corey and Alex Dion outside a New Hampshire homeless shelter where Corey was arrested is Darlene Haynes's daughter.
"I really thought it was my daughter. I really did...I don't know what to think. I'm really confused," says Dion. "I feel bad for the baby's father. I feel bad for Darlene's family and I wish this never happened...It's stuff you see in the movies. It doesn't happen in real life."
On Thursday, Karl Whitney, Haynes's uncle, said his family is grateful the baby she wanted to name Sheila Marie was cared for and kept alive.
"Baby was well-taken care of. Just like she was my own. I did the best I could like any father would do," says Dion. "She was a good girl. She didn't cry much. She was very content."
Dion says he's sorry for what happened but, "In no way, shape or form" was he involved. He says if he knew what had happened, he would have turned Corey in.
A custody hearing for the baby is scheduled for Monday in Worcester Juvinille Court. The baby is now in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families.
Haynes leaves three other daughters, two of whom are in the care of her grandmother. The other, 18 months old, is also in D.C.F. custody.
Her family says Haynes had a "neurological disorder," had been in special education and was on disability. No charges have been filed in the murder of Haynes who, police say, suffered blunt force head trauma.
Corey is fighting extradition from New Hampshire on a kidnapping warrant.
