Feds Will Pick Up Worcester Beetle Tab
WORCESTER (WBZ) ―
The
city of Worcester will not have to pay for the initial costs of battling a bug that has infested its trees.
The Federal government has agreed to pay the first year costs of eradicating the
Asian Longhorn Beetle, which is estimated to be around $24 million.
What hasn't been decided yet is who will pay for the rest of the project.
It's expected to take about five years to get rid of the beetles.
The rare bug has infested about 700 trees in and around Worcester.
Those trees will have to be
cut down beginning in November.
