Some Worcester city councilors are calling for a break in theĀ
massive tree-cutting program aimed at eradicating the
Asian longhorned beetle, saying some healthy trees are being destroyed unnecessarily.
The Telegram & Gazette reports that the council's Public Health and Human Services Committee has recommended that crews temporarily halt the cutting down of so-called "host" trees. Councilors said they had received complaints that state and federal officials had allowed some streets to be virtually cleared of city-owned trees, even though many were not infested.
Robert Moylan, the city's commissioner of public works and parks, said there has been no change in the tree-clearing policy.
The beetles bore dime-sized holes in hardwood trees, eventually killing them.
