Bus Driver Fired After Leaving Child Near Rt. 9

SHREWSBURY (WBZ) ― A Shrewsbury school bus driver has been fired for dropping off a fourth-grader a mile-and-a-half from her normal stop because she changed seats without permission.

"It was pretty scary," said Cyrena Medbury, who told WBZ's Ron Sanders she'd moved to the front of her bus when it stopped because the ride's less bumpy up there. "And when I got to the front seat, my bus driver just yelled at me to get off the bus; and he is a really scary guy so I actually listened to him."

Cyrena's mother, Melissa Doyle, said her 9 year old has an anxiety disorder.

"I was all alone walking but I started to run just in case he would keep yelling at me," Cyrena said.

Cyrena would have had to walk along busy Route 9 or along South Street, which is also busy, and cross Route 20.

"All very scary, especially Route 20," said Melissa Doyle.

She explained that a girl who rides the same bus told her father what had happened. That father then gave Cyrena a ride home.

"Who knows if she would have gone in the wrong direction and gotten lost, got picked-up by some crazy person, got hit by a car...I really have to thank the man and his daughter who brought her home safely,"  Melissa Doyle said.

Cyrena and her mom say they don't know the names of the man and his daughter.

There was no answer at the home of bus driver Donald Davison Jr., who was fired.

"He was very remorseful," said Ronald Ernenwein, who owns the bus company, AA Transportation. "It's a scary thing and certainly something that we take very seriously.  It was a bad judgment for a driver that has had a great record."

"I was shocked because he was her driver since first grade," said Melissa Doyle.  She filed a report with Shrewsbury Police who say they're investigating.

Cyrena's mother says her daughter went to the doctor instead of school Thursday because of her anxiety disorder, but will be OK to ride the bus again.
