The Asian Longhorned Beetle (shown here) is often mistaken for a less destructive beetle called the White Spotted Pine Sawyer Beetle, which was found in Douglas.

Douglas residents were relieved to find out that a beetle found over the weekend is not the destructive Asian Longhorned beetle.
A man found the beetle and feared it could be the dreaded Asian Longhorned Beetle, which has killed thousands of trees in neighboring Worcester.
However, the beetle is actually a White Spotted Pine Sawyer Beetle, which is frequently mistaken for the Asian Longhorned. The Asian Longhorned Beetle is a black bug with white spots and striped antennae. The White Spotted Pine Sawyer Beetle Dennis Bishop trapped in a wine glass has a black body, white spots and striped antennae.
Bishop was notified Wednesday by the USDA that it was the White Spotted beetle, which came as a huge relief.
However, the White Spotted beetle isn't exactly benign. Bishop suspects it has killed some of his pine trees.
The Asian Longhorned Beetle has infested the city of Worcester, forcing the removal of thousands of trees.
