Police: Holy Cross Football Player Stabs Teammate

WORCESTER (WBZ) ― Worcester police say a College of the Holy Cross football player attacked a teammate as the two celebrated a victory.

Police told the Telegram and Gazette 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman Michael McCabe of Watertown, Conn., attacked wide receiver Luke Chmielinski at about 2 a.m. on Sunday in an off-campus apartment, leaving him bleeding from the back and chest.

Police say Chmielinski of Walpole told an officer he had been stabbed, but later refused to answer questions. He was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

McCabe and another man in the apartment hours after Holy Cross's 41-34 win over Brown University are charged with assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The other man, Stephen Kiely, is not a student.

Coach Tom Gilmore calls police reports of the incident "inaccurate."
