State May Not Be Able To Cover Ice Storm Costs
WORCESTER (AP) ―
Massachusetts communities expecting the state to help cover cleanup costs from a
devastating ice storm last December may have to look elsewhere for the money.
Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray told the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester Thursday that the state's deepening fiscal crisis may prevent it from providing the 25 percent share of cleanup costs not covered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Murray, a former Worcester mayor, says he understands the financial pressures that cities and towns are under and is not ruling out the possibility that the state could still provide some of the funds.
FEMA is processing requests from 278 cities and towns in Massachusetts from the Dec. 11-12 storm. The north-central part of the state was hardest hit, with some residents losing electricity for nearly two weeks.
