Elderly Worcester Man Dies Following Ice Storm

WORCESTER (AP) ― A 91-year-old Worcester man injured Dec. 13 after his clothes were set on fire by a propane space heater being used inside his home following an early December ice storm has died.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports that George Bergan died at UMass Memorial Medical Center on Christmas Eve. His death certificate says congestive heart failure was the underlying cause of death.

Bergan was without electricity following the ice storm Dec. 11-12.

Bergan's daughter brought over the heater because temperatures in the home dropped to 42 degrees. The fire department responded to the man's home at about 8 a.m. on Dec. 13 after he came in contact with the heater and his clothes ignited.
