3 Seeking Custody Of Stolen Worcester Baby

WORCESTER (WBZ) ― The baby removed from the body of a pregnant Worcester woman will remain in state custody until the case is continued in September.

At least three people are seeking custody of the newborn police call "Baby Haynes." The infant girl's mother, 23-year-old Darlene Haynes, was found slain in her Worcester apartment last week.

Roberto Rodriguez, Haynes' boyfriend, says the child is his daughter and he wants custody.

Darlene Hayne's uncle and aunt, Karl and Beverly Whitney also filed for custody late today after a closed hearing in Worcester Juvinille Court.

The child was taken into custody by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) last week after the woman accused of kidnapping the baby, Julie Corey, was found with the child and her boyfriend Alex Dion, outside a New Hampshire homless shelter.

Dion says Corey had told him the baby was their own, but police believe the infant was cut from the womb of Haynes. Dion has since been released from police custody.

Friends say they saw Julie Corey with Haynes the last day she was seen alive.

Corey is fighting extradition from New Hampshire where she is being held on a fugtive charge for a kidnapping warrant. No murder charges have been filed.

Darlene Haynes leaves two other daughters, ages 3 and 5 who are in the custody of her grandmother, and an 18-month-old girl who is also in state custody.

A spokesperson for DCF says the state needs time to allow for DNA testing and to become familiar with all parties involved.

Rodriguez is accused of assaulting Haynes in late June as well as in 2008. He has called whoever murdered her a "monster."
