A group of volunteers is joining an effort to find the invasive Asian longhorn beetle in central Massachusetts.
The nonprofit Greater Worcester Land Trust is training people to comb woodland areas in and around Worcester for signs of the destructive insect.
The conservation organization is launching a new round of training sessions to teach ordinary citizens how to spot signs of the insect. The sessions come just as new beetles are emerging from trees. The bugs bore holes in hardwoods, eventually killing them.
Executive Director Colin Novick tells the Telegram & Gazette that volunteers can supplement professional tree surveyors, go where surveyors have not gone and find new problem areas.
