He was only ten years old, riding his brand new bike, which his father bought for him.
But what was supposed to be a fun ride in the park Saturday evening ended in a parent's worst nightmare.
"Little boy came out of the park and truck ran him over, it was a total accident," witness Troy Fitton said.
Close friends of the family say his name is Giovanni Melendez.
Yolanda Ortiz says Giovanni used to play with her son.
"His father bought him a bike he was outside with it and they went to the park," Ortiz said.
Worcester Police Sergeant Timothy Watts said the boy was exiting the park on his bike onto Acton Street in Worcester when he was struck by a pick-up truck.
"At some point the vehicle and boy came in contact with each other. While swerving away trying to get away from the child, the operator of the pick-up struck a parked car on the other side of the road," Sgt. Watts said.
The child was rushed to UMass Memorial Medical Center where he passed away.
Although he was only ten years old, Giovanni was well known in the neighborhood.
"He is outgoing, full of surprises very happy boy," Ortiz said.
Witnesses say Giovanni was not wearing a helmet, even though they're required for any child under the age of 16.
No charges have been filed against anyone at this point in the investigation.
