Drivers Endure Long Wait For $1.99 Gas

WORCESTER (WBZ) ― 800 drivers waited in line for almost two hours to buy gas at a station in Worcester Tuesday. The reason - regular unleaded was selling for $1.99 a gallon.

Despite the long wait, there were smiles, hugs, and excited drivers pulling into the Gulf station on Pleasant Street for the half-price gas, which was paid for by Digital Federal Credit Union.

"If we're helping somebody save $40 today that they can put towards groceries or put in their savings account or pay bills, we've made all the difference in the world," DCU spokesman John LaHair told WBZ.

"This is a blessing! It's like Christmas," said Yvonne McMillan-Johnson, who planned to put the extra money into her daughter's college fund.

The station sold 7,429 gallons of gasoline during the 6-hour event, which started at 7 a.m. They usually sell 5,000 gallons in an entire day.

One woman ran out of gas while waiting in line.

The current average for a gallon of self-serve unleaded in Massachusetts is $4.03, according to the latest AAA southern New England survey.
