Worcester Firefighters Ratify Contract
WORCESTER (AP) ―
The city and its unionized firefighters have a new contract that covers the last fiscal year, this fiscal year and the next.
City Manager Michael V. O'Brien says the deal, which was ratified by members of Local 1009, International Association of Fire Fighters Friday night, calls for 2 percent raises for both fiscal years 2008 and 2009, but no pay increase in fiscal 2010, which begins July 1.
Firefighters also have agreed to pay 25 percent of their health insurance premiums, beginning July 1, and higher co-payments for medical visits and services.
O'Brien says the city hopes use the health care savings to restore some firefighter positions.
