Driver Faces Charges In Deadly Wrong-Way Crash

BOSTON (WBZ) ― A Norwood man police say caused a fatal head-on crash while drunk and driving the wrong way on the Massachusetts Turnpike has been ordered held on $100,000 cash bail.

Philip Daniels, 33, was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court before noontime on Monday.

According to police, Daniels was driving his Jeep Grand Cherokee on the wrong side of the Mass. Pike when he hit an oncoming sports car just before the Prudential Tunnel around 2 a.m. on Sunday.

Prosecutors say Daniels got on the Pike at the Congress Street exit in South Boston.

Daniels, who admitted to police he was drinking at a Boston bar before the crash, was not injured. According to prosecutors, Daniels registered a .23 when he took a Breathalyzer test at the crash scene, which is three times over the legal limit.

In court, prosecutor Gregory Henning said Daniels tried to escape while sitting in a state police car. "When the trooper began interviewing other witnesses, Daniels began running up the Pike eastbound, heading back into the city. He was subdued by other troopers who were there to help the initial officer."

The driver of the sports car, Rene Bronfield, 49, of Worcester, was rushed to Mass. General Hospital. Bronfield lost an eye and suffered other severe facial and internal injuries. His passenger, whose identity is being withheld, died at the crash scene.

Daniels faces several charges, including motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol and operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury.

He is due back in court on Jan. 27.
