Recalled Toyota SUV Crashes On The Cape

YARMOUTH (WBZ) ― An elderly driver who was behind the wheel of her Toyota Rav 4 when it slammed into a medical building says there's something wrong with the car.

"She put her foot on the brake, and next thing you know, the car accelerates and it's in the building, and she looks down after she crashes, because her head's down, and her foot's on the brake," says her daughter, Kim Wilkins.

The car, which she bought in November, is among millions of Toyotas that have been recalled because of problems with gas pedals sticking. She says her mother, Anne Wilkins, brought it into her dealer to get it fixed last month, and assumed it would be OK.

"Unfortunately I think that people are going to think it's because she's a senior," says her daughter. "I believe it was the car for sure. I mean, I don't believe a car can launch into an office. It just doesn't make any sense."

Wilkins, had to be extricated from the car, went to Cape Cod Hospital with minor injures.

Yarmouth Police say the gas and brake pedals were intact, and the airbags did not deploy. They say it's too early to tell whether the Toyota recall issues had anything to do with the accident.

They do plan to test the vehicle this weekend.
