This special advertising section content provided by Massachusetts General HospitalHeart failure is the leading cause of hospitalization for people over age 65, and causes more than 260,000 deaths each year. Currently there are nearly five million people in the U.S. with
heart failure, and doctors anticipate the number of those who suffer from heart failure to increase over the next decade. However, there is good news. New therapies are available to help people who suffer from heart failure, including cardiac resynchronization therapy.
WHAT IS CARDIAC RESYNCHRONIZATION THERAPY?Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) or CRT-D (CRT with a defibrillator) is an innovative therapeutic option that improves the heart pumping function. This is done by implanting a special pacemaker that regulates heart compressions to pump blood more efficiently.
CRT can: Improve blood circulation
Improve heart function
Improve quality of life
Increase exercise capacity
Reduce hospitalization for heart failure
Prevent death
WHAT IS THE CRT PROGRAM?The
CRT program at the
Massachusetts General Hospital Heart Center is the first of its kind in the nation. Each patient is treated by a team of specialists from different areas within Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery to diagnose and treat heart failure.
Services include evaluation, education, device implantation and long-term follow-up to ensure optimal treatment for each patient.
Click here for more information on what the CRT program includes.ARE YOU A CANDIDATE FOR THE CRT PROGRAM?CRT has proven to be a safe therapy for patients with advanced heart failure. Certain medical conditions such as low ejection fraction, evidence of conduction-tissue disease and moderate to severe cardiac symptoms despite other medical therapy are indicators that a patient is a candidate for CRT.
If you know you have any of the above conditions or want to learn more, speak with your doctor about being evaluated by a specialist. He or she can help determine if your condition would be improved by becoming part of the program. You can also contact the Massachusetts General Hospital
Heart Center directly at 866-MGH-8910.
